FEMALE VOICES - From Influence to Authorship
From The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Fleabag, from Buffy The Vampire Slayer to The Handmaid’s Tale: Stories about women in television have never evolved in isolation. They build on each other, challenge what came before and reflect the lived experiences of the generations creating them.
This session explores two central threads: First, the idea of a shared lineage and how today’s creators and actors are shaped by the female characters and series they grew up with, and how these influences consciously or unconsciously find their way into the stories they tell now. What does it mean to inherit a
history of representation, and how does that legacy continue to evolve?
Second, the question of authenticity versus expectation and how personal experience can inform storytelling while still navigating industry structures, audience demands and genre conventions. How do female perspectives move between the political and the intimate, between visibility and nuance? And where do new spaces open up for complexity rather than cliché? Grounded in personal perspective yet looking forward, FEMALE VOICES aims to offer a realistic view of where female storytelling stands today while highlighting the creative momentum, diversity of voices and narrative possibilities that continue to expand what stories about women in series can be.
