The post-apocalypse has no Y chromosome. For when an inexplicable catastrophe wipes out people with Y chromosomes in one fell swoop, the world - and not just because of the loss of so many key infrastructural posts - comes apart at the seams. Even more so when two male survivors emerge in the form of escape artist Yorick and his monkey Ampersand, over whom a fierce battle soon breaks out between a wide variety of political factions. In the middle of it all: Yorick's mother, who has been promoted to president, and loyal Agent 355.

20 years on, Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's cult comic hasn't lost any of its relevance to this day, and their epic tale is still going strong. On the contrary. Realized by an all-female team, the Hulu production demotes the former main character to a supporting one; instead of dark humor, a disturbingly gloomy tone between "Handmaid's Tale" and "The Leftovers" dominates. This gives the creators and their actresses (including Diane Keaton, Olivia Thirlby) the opportunity to deal with issues surrounding gender identity, thereby taking the title ad absurdum in a provocative way.
