It has been nearly 15 years since David Schalko created “Braunschlag,” one of the most important Austrian series of recent decades, and established himself as a leading series creator. Now, season two is here: Over a decade ago, Braunschlag was the talk of the town. A supposed apparition of the Virgin Mary drew thousands of tourists to the northern Waldviertel region until a nuclear accident rendered the area inaccessible. All the residents of Braunschlag fled—except for Mayor Gerri Tschach and disco owner Richard Pfeisinger. Now the air is clear again, but somehow it’s already gone. Yet Tschach has an idea: He promptly enacts a decree stating that, effective immediately, the year 1986 reigns in Braunschlag. Nostalgia meets digital detox—Braunschlag is back. And with it, the former residents—led by Tschach’s wife, Herta.
