Annette Hess was born in Hanover in 1967. After studying painting and interior design, she turned to 'Szenisches Schreiben' at the Berlin University of Arts. This was followed by work as a freelance journalist, assistant and director at ARD television and as a script editor for production companies and broadcasters. She has been working as a screenwriter since 1998 and has received numerous awards for her works including the series "Weissensee" (ARD) and the movies "Kudamm 56/59/63" (ZDF), such as the German Television Award in the category "Best Book", the Grimme Prize and the Prize of Authors Frankfurt. The Amazon-prime series "We children from Bahnhof Zoo" was developed by Annette Hess as head writer with a writer's room and creative producer. She is also one of the founding members of the screenwriters' initiative Kontrakt 18, which gives authors more creative control and a say in the filmmaking process. She is also a member of the board of the German Screenplay Association. In September 2018, Hess' first novel 'Deutsches Haus' was published, which she adapted as a series and realized as showrunner for Disney+.
