In 2021, while the world was in lockdown, the Iranian web series “Happiness” was presented in the digital watchroom of Seriencamp Festival as a kind of window into a world that is often hidden from us and, in some ways, isolated from the West. Before she was set to leave Iran with her mother, the young Shadi was traveling through the country in search of her father—a journey she had long since left behind by the second season. It has been six months since her arrival in France—and, of course, the young woman is still struggling to find her way between adaptation and loneliness. It is only after meeting the Franco-Iranian Arezou that Shadi begins to open up. Instead of searching for her father, she is now seeking stability and freedom in a world that is still foreign to her—and through the experience of exile, her new friendship, and also love, she is slowly transforming into a politically active person.
