Country Queen

Cinema

„Country Queen“ ran 2023 in the festival cinema program.

A young woman caught between two worlds: Coproduced by arte, ZDF and Netflix, this “Country Queen” demonstrates how TV series production in a globalized world can become tangible structural development aid.

Early young Akisa (Melissa Kiplagat) has left her Kenyan home village to start a new, modern and successful life as an event manager in the bustling metropolis of Nairobi. When she returns ten years later for a visit to her ailing father, she has to discover that a significant gold discovery nearby could mean economic uplift, but also the end of her home. Between city and countryside, idealism and corruption, she must choose a path that can be seen emblematic of the development of the whole country . Things are certainly looking up for Kenyan film and series production thanks to this "Country Queen": Organized by Good Karma Fiction and the DW Academy, and financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the project has helped to further professionalize the Kenyan series and film industry.
