Serialcamp's Essential Viewing

These series new starts we watch in March

After the Drama Series Days is now apparently before the immediate broadcast of most of the future series hits presented here. As many as three of seven Berlinale entries are already celebrating their premiere in March. By no means the only thing worth watching in March. Shall be really cold again, the winter. Fortunately...

STREAM

JESSICA JONES - SEASON 2

WHERE: Netflix, from 08.03.

WHO: Melissa Rosenberg (showrunner), Krysten Ritter, Carrie-Anne Moss (cast)

WHAT: The most compelling female superhero yet picks up where "The Defenders" left off in terms of content only, revealing even more human weaknesses and female strengths.

WY: Because season 1 was already one of the most positive surprises of the series year, and after the weaker recent "Defenders" entries, we finally (want to) see light at the end of the tunnel.

THE LOOMING TOWER

WHERE: Amazon Prime, starting March 09

Who: Dan Futterman (showrunner), Alex Gibney (producer), Tahar Ramin, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeff Daniels (cast)

WHAT: Serial adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction book about the intelligence mishap-lined path to 9/11.

WY: A sort of fact-based "Homeland" with these actors? Hulu (the home channel of "Tower") continues its "winning streak."

COLLATERAL

WHERE: Netflix, as of March 09

WHO: David Hare (writer), S.L. Clarkson (director), Carey Mulligan (actress)

WHAT: Co-produced by BBC Two and Netflix, in which the wonderful Carey Mulligan tries to solve the murder of a Syrian pizza delivery boy in London.

WY: Because of the wonderful Carey Mulligan, but also a bit because of "Doctor Who" companion Billie Piper.

LOVE - SEASON 3

WHERE: Netflix, from 09.03.

WHO: Judd Apatow (co-creator), Paul Rust, Gillian Jacobs (cast)

WHAT: Perhaps the most charming and honest TV romance with obstacles (next to "Catastrophe").

WY: Because after the few ups and many downs we hope for a final happy ending (last season!), but are sure that this will not be so easy at all.

GOMORRHA - SEASON 3

WHERE: Sky Atlantic HD, starting 06.03. in double episodes and on demand

Who: Leonardo Fasoli, Maddalana Ravagli, Ludovica Rampoldi (writers), Claudio Cupellini and Francesca Comencini (directors)

What: The authentic, dirty and fascinating alternative to "The Godfather": the fraternal power struggle for Naples scales new brutal heights.

Why: In Italy, the season opener has even eclipsed that of "Game Of Thrones". Rightfully so!

ATLANTA - SEASON 2

WHERE: FOX, starting March 08

WHO: Donald Glover (creator, lead actor)

WHAT: The "Robbin' Season" centered around Earn and his rapping cousin Paper Boi with a still surreal but slightly darker vibe.

Why: Because Glover not only snagged two Emmys, but also left himself enough time to make the second season a real highlight as well.

BILLIONS - SEASON 3

WHERE: Sky Atlantic HD and on demand, from 26.03.

Who: Brian Koppelman and David Levien (showrunners), Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Maggie Siff (actors)

What: The third round in the never-ending battle between high finance shark and political egomaniac.

Why: Because the cockfight between Giamatti and Lewis is at least as worth watching as the increasingly dominant Maggie Siff.

THE TERROR

WHERE: Amazon Prime, out March 26

Who: David Kajganich (creator), Ridley Scott (producer), Dan Simmons (submission), Jared Harris, Ciaran Hinds (cast)

WHAT: A sort of "thing from another world," based on a true story resp. the novel by sci-fi icon Dan Simmons.

Why: Because everything from the scenario to the set to the people involved screams series hit.

FREE TV

BAD BANKS

WHERE: arte, from 03/01, 20:15 / ZDF, from 03/03. 21:45 Uhr

WHO: Oliver Kienle (head writer), Christian Schwochow (director), Paula Beer (actress)

WHAT: Gripping high-finance thriller about power, greed, manipulation and abuse in the banking sector, which has not yet been purged.

WY: Because we have been eagerly awaiting the finished product since the "Work In Progress" presentation at the SERIENCAMP CONFERENCE.

LIAR

WHERE: VOX, starting March 14.

Who: Harry and Jack Williams (creators), Joanne Froggatt, Ioan Gruffudd (actors)

What: A date with serious consequences not only for the couple directly involved.

WY: Because sex, lies and secrets always draw and the Williams brothers have already hooked us a bit with "Rellik" on SERIENCAMP.

DVD/BD

THE HANDMAID'S TALE

WHERE: Fox Home (DVD, Blu-ray), from 15.03.

WHO: Bruce Miller (showrunner), Margaret Atwood (original), Elizabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahoski (cast)

WHAT: X-rated and cutting-edge adaptation of Margaret Atwood's dystopian classic.

WY: Because now we can get around the two-year contract with a telecommunications provider after all...

After I GET TO HIM

WHERE: Polyband (DVD, Blu-ray), from 12.03.

WHO: Louise Doughty (creator), Amanda Coe (writer), Jesica Hobbs (director), Emily Watson (performer)

WHAT: BBC miniseries that wowed sophisticated U.K. thriller audiences as "Apple Tree Yard" last year.

Why: Because we're not so easily fooled by the Rosamunde Pilcher memorial title.

VALKYRIAS

WHERE: Studio Hamburg (DVD, Blu-ray), out Mar. 16.

WHO:Erik Richter Strand (director), Sven Nordin (cast)

WHAT: Norway's answer to "Breaking Bad" scores with illegal underground clinic work.

Why: Because we've also been shy about signing a multi-year contract here so far.
